Here comes our weekly wax competition results for week #2! We are preparing for a JNQ at Theodore Wirth this weekend so we decided to focus our weekly competition on testing for these races. We changed up our competition format a little bit and decided to narrow the focus to paraffins. We all were able to pick out 2 different paraffins that Jeremy would apply equally to all skis. All skis were then covered with the same Rex NF41 liquid to imitate a race top coat.
Before we decided which waxes to test, we had a conversation about the fair way to pick out waxes. Should it be first come, first serve? Should we take turns? Should it be ranked somehow? Ultimately, we decided on a fantasy football style snake draft. The order was determined by the current reverse rankings of the overall standings, so Ian was first, Matt was second, Jake was 3rd, Jeremy 4th, and then back to Jeremy again as 5th. Below is the results of the "Fantasy Wax Draft"!
Pick 1.01 - Ian - Rex NF21 Paraffin
Pick 1.02 - Matt C. - Star Next Med Powder
Pick 1.03 - Jake - Swix TSP6 Powder
Pick 1.04 - Jeremy - Star Dark Med Powder
Pick 2.01 - Jeremy - Rex NFX21 Powder
Pick 2.02 - Jake - Swix Marathon Powder
Pick 2.03 - Matt C. - Rode RX32 Paraffin
Pick 2.04 - Ian - Rode R30 Paraffin
We went to Elm Creek on Wednesday afternoon during the heat of the day to mimic the weekend temperatures as best as we could. It was ~27F when we tested, but the snowpack was still quite cold from the cold spell we have had the past few days. To rank the results for our overall competition, we decided that each person's best wax would be counted. Below are the results from the test:
Test Results:
- Star Dark Med Powder +0cm - Jeremy
- Rode RX32 Paraffin +5cm - Matt C.
- Rex NFX21 Powder +10cm
- Rode R30 Powder +10cm - Ian
- Rex NF21 Paraffin +30cm
- Star Med Powder +40cm
- Swix Marathon Powder +40cm - Jakob
- Swix TSP6 Powder +50cm
Overall Ranking
- Jeremy +0cm
- Matt +25cm
- Ian +35cm
- Jakob +60cm
There is a chance we will do another "bonus" competition this weekend testing top coats at the JNQ's this weekend. Stay tuned!
