Classic skiing: This is the more traditional style of skiing which involves a diagonal stride technique. When most people think about cross country skiing they picture classic skiing. This can be done in tracks on a groomed trail or you can break your own trail through deeper snow.
Skate skiing: Skate skiing is most similar to the motion of ice skating where you are pushing sideways on the ski. This is often a faster technique than classic but needs a groomed trail to do it effectively.
